Chaparrelle plays with a range of mediums. You can find sculpture, drawing, painting, illustration and abstracts in her work. To Chaparrelle, art is at its core a form of self-expression and connection to other beings. A personal experience. A way of knowing. And a method to scrape out clinging inner unconscious scraps into the conscious realm. As a result, her work has evolved over time alongside her developing mind. In the past, she explored the intersections of nature and urbanization growing up as a young woman in the cement jungle of Los Angeles in an exposition titled Beauty and The Abyss located at The Smell in Downtown Los Angeles. This show was comprised of sculpture, collage, painting, drawing and interactive works. In San Francisco her show titled You Could be Funny Too at The Brew used illustration to understand the complexities of seemingly mundane human experiences and the innate desire to feel a sense of belonging. Her current work has merged into the abstract realm to work through feelings of vulnerability, oppression and boundaries and aims to blur the lines between culture and identity through vivid portals to belonging.
